You want money now???

Many lawyers advertise free consultations and contingency fees. A contingency fee agreement that states that an attorney won't be paid unless the attorney recovers money from the opposing party. Contingency fee agreements are generally only used in personal injury cases, like medical malpractice or car accidents. In fact, family law and divorce attorneys cannot use contingency fee contracts. You will be required to make some kind of payment in advance for the services of a divorce or family law attorney and you should expect to pay a consultation fee as well.

Why should I hire a lawyer to handle my divorce?

Many people believe that they can handle their divorce without the assistance of an attorney.  If you own anything, such as a home or a car or have children with you spouse you should get a lawyer. Property, such as a home or a car must be transferred in a specific manner to be legally correct.

People also think that using one lawyer will save them money. In the short term, using one lawyer can save the money. Just remember that in Texas, a lawyer can't represent both parties to a divorce. This means that only one party has representation and that party has an advantage. Many people come to see me because they feel that the other party took advantage of them in the process of the divorce. Often it is too late to fix problems once a divorce decree has already been entered.

Handling a divorce without assistance from an attorney can be very stressful. The least stressful way to get a divorce is to have someone else do it for you!
